    When we talk about the "food system," we are talking about a complex supply chain involving planting, growing (spraying chemicals or not), harvesting, processing (minimally washing or more involved value-added processing), marketing, retailing, purchasing, and preparation of what we eat.  The food system also includes waste, ideally recycling and composting to feed the waste back into the system.
